Changing attitudes to, and improving the lives of, ex-detainees and migrant communities

Samphire is a charity and we depend on the support of volunteers to keep supporting ex-detainees nationwide and to deliver our local community outreach and awareness work.

Here are some of our current volunteer roles:

Role Title: Community Volunteer – Dover Welcomes All

Samphire is a charity based in Dover who are looking for an enthusiastic volunteer that would like to help with an exciting new project in Dover. The volunteer will continue to support Dover to become a welcoming town to all.  This post is for anyone that has a passion for equality and diversity and is keen to raise awareness and make Dover more welcoming to newcomers.  Applications are welcome from people of all ages and backgrounds.

Samphire’s mission is to improve the lives of people released from immigration detention and experiencing destitution in the UK, and to support the development of well-informed, cohesive and diverse communities in the Dover area and beyond.

Activities

  • Attend monthly Core Committee meetings at the Dover Welcomes All forum.
  • Commit to supporting the Core Committee to meet their aims.
  • Contribute ideas to make Dover more welcoming.
  • Promoting Samphire’s vision and mission locally.
  • Promoting Equality and Diversity for all within Dover.

Skills 

  • Good public speaking and networking skills.
  • Good written skills and the ability to use social media.
  • Organised, reliable, creative and proactive.
  • Ability to promote services and find new opportunities to raise awareness.
  • Some understanding of challenges facing migrants living in Dover.
  • Ability to work unsupervised.

All skills are desirable but not essential.

Training

Samphire will provide any relevant training.

Samphire is keen to provide relevant training to increase volunteer’s confidence in community engagement.

Commitments

One afternoon a week/flexible/community based.

To attend the Dover Welcomes All committee group meetings held monthly.

Reports to: Volunteer coordinator.

 

Role Title: Schools of Sanctuary support volunteer and promoter

 Samphire is a charity based in Dover looking for a support volunteer to assist in delivering the Schools of Sanctuary workshops in Kent.  We are looking for someone who is confident in a classroom setting and can support the facilitator. The role would involve collecting feedback, aiding class discussions and helping the facilitator with resources. The workshops deliver interesting and informative sessions on migration. These workshops feed into the school’s curriculum and to become a recognised School of Sanctuary.

Activities

  • Promoting Schools of Sanctuary to encourage schools to sign up to School of Sanctuary award.
  • Supporting the facilitator with workshops in schools.

Skills

  • Confident in liaising with primary school children.
  • Awareness of Migration issues.
  • Awareness of equality and diversity challenges
  • Good communicator.
  • Confidence to interact with schools.
  • Organised, personable and passionate.

All skills are desirable but not essential.

Training

Samphire will provide relevant training-including safeguarding children and young people.

Samphire is keen to provide relevant training to increase volunteer’s confidence in community engagement.

Commitments

Be available to attend schools between 9am-3pm (please allow for travel).

Pass a Disclosure and barring service check (Samphire will cover the cost).

Flexible approach to promoting Schools of Sanctuary.

Reports to: Volunteer Coordinator.

 

Role Title:  Volunteer Event Assistant

 Samphire is looking for a Volunteer Event Assistant to assist with the Dover Together Multicultural festival. The Dover Together Multicultural festival is an opportunity for Dover to come together to celebrate diversity within the community. It is our opportunity to showcase the rich variety of food, dance, music and culture that make up Dover.  The event will be held in Pencester Gardens in the heart of Dover where last year, over 700 people attended.

We encourage local schools and businesses to get involved, providing workshops and delivering performances.  The Event Assistant will be expected to help facilitate these workshops and performances. If you are unable to make the event we would still encourage you to apply for the role to support in the pre planning of the day.

Events are an important part of Samphire mission as they provide an opportunity to engage with the public to meet our aims and objectives through raising awareness.

This year the Event will be held on 30TH of June 2018 12pm-4pm Pencester Gardens, Dover.

Activities

  • Attend regular planning meetings to help organise the event and help put these plans into action.
  • Take on an active role of organising particular aspects of the day:
    • Set up/ Set down
    • Workshops
    • Inviting community organisations/groups to attend
    • Health and Safety
    • Promotions
    • Music and performances
    • International food
    • Event Lay out
    • Event Marshalling
  • Take an active role in organising the event promotions through word of mouth, leafleting, newsletter, website, emails and social media as well an involvement in the event marketing design.

If you feel you have the skills to bring something to the event please do not hesitate in applying. There will be more than one Event Assistant so if you are only able to commit to a few activities please still apply.

Commitments

Attendance of Event Planning meetings, once per fortnight until May then once a week.

Attendance at event between 7am-6pm (hours may vary between these times).

Commitment to organising an aspect of the event as listed above.

Reports to: Volunteer Coordinator.

 

Role Title:  Community Hub Volunteer

 

Samphire is looking for an enthusiastic volunteer that would like to become involved in the Community Hub, Belgrave Road, Dover.  The Community Hub was first started by Dover District Council with the aim of increasing social cohesion within the area.  The Community Hub has weekly activities such as boxing, dancing, and cooking and more.  This is a rewarding role and would be ideal for anyone who would like to or likes to socialise.

Activites

  • Organise and plan for the group.
  • Attend the group weekly on a Thursday 5.30pm-7.30pm.
  • Set up and set down group.
  • Communicate with other professionals.
  • Engage the community whilst at the group.
  • Promote the group through social media and other marketing communications.
  • Cooking with the families that attend the group.
  • Attend networking events to promote the group.

 Skills 

  • Organised and reliable.
  • A good communicator with professionals and the public.
  • Ability to promote the group through social media/networking events/ marketing communications.

 All skills are desirable but not essential.

Samphire is happy to provide any relevant training.

Commitments

Attendance at the Community Hub 5pm-8pm every Thursday however the Hub is closed during school holidays.

Attendance at planning meetings- These happen once a quarter.

1 hour per week planning the Community Hub and organising resources for it.

Reports to: Volunteer Coordinator.
