The Detention Support Project

Samphire’s Detention Support Project supported detainees in Dover Immigration Removal Centre before its sudden closure in Autumn 2015.

What we did

            • We operated a visitor scheme under which we recruited, trained and managed volunteer visitors to Dover Immigration Removal Centre.
            • We undertook casework on behalf of detainees at Dover to improve their quality of life in detention as well as to assist them in obtaining legal advice and practical assistance.
            • We ran a weekly drop-in session in Dover IRC to provide practical support to detain

The Detention Support project assisted 600 detainees held at Dover IRC per year on average. At any one time, we are in contact with a third of the detainees held at the centre.
