There was music in the air, laughter in the gardens, the aroma of food from around the world, and people from every walk of life coming together to celebrate what unites us rather than what divides us.
The Dover Multicultural Festival was so much more than a day of entertainment. It was a powerful reminder of the kind of community we can build when we create spaces where everyone feels welcome.
From the opening welcome to the final performance, Pencester Gardens was alive with music, dance, conversation and friendship. Families shared food, children danced without inhibition, people sampled cuisines they’d never tried before, and strangers became friends. Every performance, every smile and every conversation helped to tell the story of a community at its best.
As the organisers, we’d like to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who came along, performed, volunteered, supported or simply stopped by to experience the day. You made the festival what it was. But while we’re incredibly proud of what we achieved together, the importance of days like these goes far beyond one Saturday in June.
Why festivals like this matter
We are living through a time when division can often feel louder than unity. Across the country, we’ve seen growing hostility towards people seeking sanctuary, increasing incidents of racism, and narratives that encourage us to see our differences as something to fear rather than celebrate. Social media and headlines can sometimes make it feel as though communities are becoming more divided than ever.
That is why spaces like the Dover Multicultural Festival are so important. Prejudice often grows where there is distance and misunderstanding. It becomes much harder to hold onto stereotypes when you’ve shared food with someone, applauded their culture, danced to their music or simply chatted over a cup of tea.
Real change doesn’t always happen in Parliament or on television. Sometimes it begins with a conversation in a park.
Celebrating the Dover we know
At Samphire, we see every day the incredible contribution that people from different backgrounds make to our community. Dover has always been a place where journeys begin and end—a town shaped by movement, resilience and welcome.
The festival reflected that story beautifully. The incredible performers, community groups, artists, volunteers and visitors showcased the richness that diversity brings to our town. They reminded us that our differences don’t weaken our communities—they make them stronger, more creative and more vibrant.
Seeing hundreds of people enjoying the day together gave us hope. Hope that, despite the negativity we sometimes hear, kindness remains stronger than hate, curiosity is more powerful than fear, and community can always overcome division.
This is only the beginning
The Dover Multicultural Festival may be over for another year, but the spirit of the day shouldn’t end when the stage is packed away. Building inclusive communities isn’t something that happens once a year. It’s something we all have the opportunity to do every day—by choosing kindness over suspicion, conversation over assumption, and welcome over exclusion.
At Samphire, we’ll continue working alongside people from all backgrounds to build a Dover where everyone feels they belong. Because when we come together, we don’t just celebrate our differences—we discover how much we have in common.Thank you for being part of this year’s Dover Multicultural Festival.
