There are three stages to our Kent Schools of Sanctuary project. The schools who have committed to the project must complete all three stages to eventually become a school of sanctuary, they are:

Learn By offering free extra-curricular workshops in schools and through our resource based websitewe provide tools and lesson plans for pupils and staff to continue learning about refugees and migration.

Embed We support schools to embed this learning into curriculum subjects. There are governors packs to enable schools to have all those involved to consider and discuss their schools policies and procedures.

Share We encourage schools to share their experiences and new found knowledge with the broader community, for example through letters to parents or school assembly’s  to show the progress they have made and include the wider community in celebrating inclusion.

Every element of the project is aimed at making this work sustainable: the Kent schools of Sanctuary website allows schools to develop this work across curricular learning, the embed element supports schools to put practical procedures in place for enabling pupils’ to support and learn from each other across divides and the sharing element encourages schools to involve the wider community to celebrate the work schools have been doing and be part of the process of building understanding and support across ethnic and faith communities.

Our project starts with the youngest generations, but it is all our responsibility to spread positive views and facts about migrants and refugees to help promote solidarity within our own communities in Kent.
